The Russian Embassy in Nigeria has denied any involvement with protesters waving the Russian flag during the #EndBadGovernance protests. In a statement released on Monday, the embassy clarified that neither the Russian government nor its officials are involved or coordinating these activities.
“The Government of the Russian Federation, as well as any Russian officials, are not involved in these activities and do not coordinate them in any way. As always, we emphasize that Russia does not interfere in the domestic affairs of foreign states, including Nigeria,” the statement read.
The embassy suggested that the use of Russian symbols by the protesters is a personal choice and does not reflect the official policy or position of the Russian government. It expressed respect for Nigeria’s democratic processes and acknowledged peaceful demonstrations as a legitimate expression of democracy, while condemning any potential disruptions or acts of violence that might arise from these events.
These comments come amid concerns raised by authorities after protesters in some northern states were seen waving the Russian flag. In response, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, labeled the act as treasonable. The Department of State Services (DSS) also reported the arrest of the tailor who produced the flags and some of the sponsors involved.
The #EndBadGovernance protests began nationwide last Thursday in response to the economic hardships in the country.
