The National Security Council has issued a stern warning regarding the use of foreign flags during protests in Nigeria, labeling it a treasonable offense. This statement follows the recent appearance of Russian flags among demonstrators participating in the #EndBadGovernance protests.
During a meeting held on Monday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, General Christopher Musa, Chief of Defense Staff, emphasized that the military would not tolerate any actions undermining Nigeria’s sovereignty. The council, presided over by President Bola Tinubu, expressed grave concerns over the potential for protests to escalate into violence and disorder.
General Musa highlighted that the initial peaceful nature of the protests has deteriorated, with reports of looting and criminal activities. He condemned the display of foreign flags, noting that such acts compromise Nigeria’s national integrity. “We are warning in clear terms that we will not accept anyone flying foreign flags in Nigeria,” Musa stated.
The council also discussed the broader implications of the ongoing unrest, which began as a peaceful demonstration but has since seen elements seeking to exploit the situation for their gain. The meeting was attended by key figures including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, and other top security officials.
The council has vowed to take decisive action against those found responsible for spreading foreign symbols and inciting unrest, reinforcing Nigeria’s commitment to democratic principles and national security.
