The Kano State police command announced the arrest of 392 individuals suspected of looting the NCC Industrial Park during the nationwide protests against hunger and hardship in Kano State, Nigeria on Thursday. These suspects were also involved in the looting of the Kano High Court and other locations in the state.
During a briefing on Friday, August 2, 2024, the state police spokesman, Abdullahi Kiyawa, revealed that the suspects were apprehended with a significant number of stolen items. The newly built NCC Park, set to be commissioned next week, was looted and set ablaze by hoodlums. Eyewitnesses reported that protesters took away desktop computers, chairs, keyboards, and other valuable items before burning the facility.
In response to the violence, Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf declared a 24-hour curfew on Thursday. “We are deeply concerned by the turn of events and are taking all necessary measures to restore order. I urge all residents to remain indoors as security agencies work to enforce the curfew,” Governor Yusuf stated.
