Former President Olusegun Obasanjo hosted members of the Board of Trustees of the African Democratic Congress at his residence within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta. The occasion marked a significant reflection on his personal history.
During the event, Obasanjo shared a remarkable detail about his birth, revealing that his mother, Mrs. Bernice Obasanjo, carried him for 12 months before his birth. He attributed the extended pregnancy to supernatural influences, specifically the interference of witches and wizards, which he claimed made his mother’s experience particularly arduous until divine intervention resolved the situation.
The disclosure was part of a drama presentation titled “Aremu Omo Asabi,” held on Wednesday at the main auditorium of the Presidential Library. This performance commemorated the 66th anniversary of Obasanjo’s late mother. In his remarks, Obasanjo expressed sorrow that his mother did not live to witness his accomplishments and the outcomes of her sacrifices.
Obasanjo reflected on the hardship faced by his family, noting that of the nine children born to his mother, only he and his sister survived. He also mentioned his unique educational opportunity, contrasting his experience with his father’s belief that education for female children was unnecessary.
In addition to his personal reflections, Obasanjo pledged support for a drama troupe’s ambition to achieve a Guinness World Record for the longest open drama.
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, represented by Deputy Governor Noimot Salako-Oyedele, praised Obasanjo’s mother as a foundational figure in society. Salako-Oyedele emphasized that the tribute was not only a historical recount but also a reminder of the vital role of mothers and the importance of supporting them.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by Secretary to the State Government Salu Hundeyin, commended Obasanjo’s dedication to honoring his mother. He underscored the special role mothers play and the need to treat them with the utmost respect and support.
The event highlighted the ongoing commitment to policies that support education, healthcare, and opportunities, aligning with the broader goal of realizing the hopes mothers have for their children.
