Andy Murray has announced his withdrawal from the tennis singles at the Paris Olympics but will still compete in the doubles event.

The two-time gold medalist, who will retire after these Games, has not fully recovered from recent back surgery.

Murray, 37, believes his best chance of winning another medal lies in the men’s doubles, where he will partner with Dan Evans. “I’ve taken the decision to withdraw from the singles to concentrate on the doubles with Dan,” said the former world number one. “Our practice has been great and we’re playing well together. Really looking forward to getting started and representing GB one more time.”

Murray secured gold medals in singles at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympics, and a silver in mixed doubles with Laura Robson in 2012. His last singles match was a brief second-round appearance at Queen’s Club against Jordan Thompson last month, cut short due to a spinal cyst.
