The Federal Government of Nigeria plans to convert petrol vehicles to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) across all 36 states by the end of 2024.
This initiative is part of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI), aimed at providing Nigerians with a cleaner and more affordable fuel alternative.
Folarin Oworu, Programme Coordinator for PCNGI, announced that the program would involve mobilizing and sensitizing all states about the benefits of CNG. “We are starting in Kaduna with 100 free conversion kits and will continue to Lagos. Our goal is to cover all states before the year ends,” Oworu said at a rally in Mando Motor Park, Kaduna.
The initiative focuses on commercial vehicles and is designed to reduce transportation costs. “The President has made the conversion free for road transport unions, which will help lower commercial transportation costs,” Oworu explained. The government aims to convert up to 250,000 vehicles annually starting next year.
Najim Yasin, former NURTW National President, praised the program, stating, “This initiative will alleviate the suffering of the masses by reducing fuel prices and transportation costs. I urge all transport organizations to participate.”
The conversion kits, valued between ₦1 million and ₦1.5 million, are being provided at no cost. Oworu emphasized that the government has established partnerships in various states to facilitate the conversions.
