The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) have begun a one-day nationwide protest over their four-month withheld salaries.
The protest has disrupted administrative operations in universities and inter-university centers.
Starting at 7:30 am, union members gathered at the popular Unity Fountain in Abuja and planned to march to the Federal Ministries of Education and Labour and Employment.
NASU General Secretary Peters Adeyemi stated that letters would be presented to both ministries.
The workers are demanding that the Federal Government pay the salaries owed to them. Despite multiple meetings with the government, there has been no resolution regarding the withheld salaries.
The ‘No work, no pay’ policy was invoked by former Minister of Labour and Employment, Sen Chris Ngige, during the prolonged strike of the four university-based unions in 2022. Consequently, the salaries of union members who participated in the strike were withheld under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
However, President Bola Tinubu granted amnesty to the university workers in October 2023 and directed that four months of the withheld salaries be paid.
