Biafra activist Simon Ekpa announced on Monday, July 15, 2024, that he has returned all the medals he won for Nigeria to the Federal Government, amid his ongoing calls for Biafra independence.
Ekpa, who is known as the Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government In-Exile, disclosed this in a statement posted on his official X handle.
“I have successfully returned the medals I won for Nigeria during my athletic days. The medals were delivered today (Monday) to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar. With this development, every tie between me and Nigeria both in sports, spiritually and physically is hereby cut off completely,” Ekpa said.
The Finland-based activist specified that the medals, including the 2003 African Junior Silver Medal, an ExxonMobile track and field Gold Medal, and an ExxonMobile track and field Silver Medal, were sent back to the Nigerian government through a logistics company from Finland last week. They were delivered to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja on Monday, July 15.
“The medals are as follows: 2003 African Junior SILVER MEDAL; ExxonMobile track and field GOLD MEDAL; ExxonMobile track and field SILVER MEDAL; Other medals have nothing to do with Nigeria, so I retain them,” he added.
Ekpa, who renounced his Nigerian citizenship in 2022, stated that this move was to further denounce Nigeria.
