Carlos Alcaraz has secured his second Wimbledon men’s singles championship by defeating Novak Djokovic in a dominant performance. The 21-year-old Spaniard, who is also the defending champion, triumphed with scores of 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (4).
Alcaraz’s victory adds to his growing list of Grand Slam achievements, which now includes two Wimbledon titles, a US Open victory in 2022, and a recent French Open win. His success on the court leaves Djokovic short of a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam singles title and one behind Roger Federer’s eight Wimbledon crowns.
The Princess of Wales, making her second public appearance since announcing her cancer diagnosis, presented the trophies to both finalists. Speaking after the match, Alcaraz expressed his elation: “Wow. Honestly, it is a dream for me winning this trophy. I did an interview when I was 12 or 11 and I said my dream was to win Wimbledon. I’m living my dream, I want to keep going. It’s a great feeling to play in this beautiful court, to lift this amazing trophy. I’ve said it before, this is the most beautiful tournament, court, and trophy.”
Djokovic, reflecting on the match, acknowledged Alcaraz’s exceptional performance: “He was definitely very hot today. Obviously not the result I wanted, and in the first couple of sets the level of tennis wasn’t up to par from my side. But credit to Carlos for really playing amazing tennis, complete tennis from the back of the court. I tried to push him, saved three match points, but it wasn’t meant to be, he was an absolutely deserved winner today, huge congratulations.”
Djokovic, who recently underwent surgery for a torn meniscus in his right knee, added: “I have to say I’m very satisfied. Wimbledon has always been a childhood dream of mine, and every time I step onto this court I feel like it’s the first time. I’m a child living my childhood dream once again.”
Sky Sports’ Raz Mirza, covering the event, noted, “Alcaraz has dominated the Djokovic serve and longer rallies from the baseline. The Spaniard is in a different league right now. This is elite tennis!” Michael Cantillon echoed this sentiment, stating, “Alcaraz is in flames. Even when Djokovic looks to have a potential edge in rallies, the Spaniard is producing perfectly-placed winners.”
The final, which was a rematch of last year’s encounter, saw numerous celebrities in attendance, including Tom Cruise, Julia Roberts, Zendaya, Jamie Dornan and his wife Amelia Warner, and Benedict Cumberbatch.
This win for Alcaraz comes a day after Barbora Krejcikova’s victory over Jasmine Paolini in the Wimbledon women’s singles final.
