The Federal Executive Council (FEC) of Nigeria has directed the swift removal of universities from the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS), aiming to resolve long-standing disputes with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The directive was issued during a council meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, elaborated on the council’s decision: “The council asked the Secretary of the Government of the Federation to expedite the implementation of the Council decision made months ago, separating the universities from the IPPIS platform.”
He further announced that the FEC ratified the establishment of the National University of Science and Technology in Abuja, emphasizing its role in advancing scientific and technological education across Africa. Onanuga stated, “The university is the first of the network of Pan African Institutes of Science and Technology dedicated to teaching African scientists and technologists.”
In addition to these strategic moves, the FEC approved various contracts designed to bolster agricultural and infrastructure development across the nation. Among these approvals are contracts for the procurement of tractors and agricultural equipment to enhance national food security, engineering audits in the oil and gas sector, and the supply of vehicles to the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission.
“This demonstrates our commitment to advancing critical sectors and achieving national development goals,” Onanuga affirmed.
