President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria has appointed Professor Attahiru Jega, former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, as the co-chairman of the committee to coordinate the implementation of livestock reforms in Nigeria.

The announcement was made during the inauguration of the Presidential Committee on Implementation of Livestock Reforms at the presidential villa in Abuja on Tuesday. Presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale shared details of the appointment.

President Tinubu emphasized that the committee’s task is to address obstacles to agricultural productivity and open up new opportunities for farmers, herders, processors, and distributors within the livestock-farming value chain. Tinubu stated, “From here, I will appeal to everyone to remove every iota of partisan politics from this. I will assume the chairmanship of the committee as President and appoint Professor Attahiru Jega as my deputy or co-chair.”

Tinubu further noted that the implementation of these reforms requires collective efforts from both public and private sector members, state governors, and all Nigerians. He highlighted the importance of transitioning from traditional methods of livestock farming to modern practices, with the support of stakeholders, including state governments.

The President also announced the establishment of a Ministry of Livestock Development to support veterinary research and cross-breeding initiatives. “With the calibre of people that are here, this presents a unique opportunity also to delineate and establish a centric ministry called the Ministry of Livestock Development. It will give us the opportunity so that our veterinary doctors can have the necessary access to research and cross-breed. We can stop the wanton killings.”

The committee’s efforts will be supported by Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Lateef Fagbemi, who will remove legal obstacles, and Minister of Communication, Innovation and Digital Economy Bosun Tijani, who will assist with automation. Tinubu emphasized the role of modern technology and urged the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning to allocate funds for the initiative.

President Tinubu concluded by stressing the potential economic benefits of livestock farming, dairy products, and cold-chain logistics, stating, “We need to provide the incentive to enable Nigeria to finally take advantage of livestock farming; dairy products and cold-chain logistics collectively offer substantial commercial and economic advantages. With these adversities that have plagued us over the years, I believe that prosperity is here in your hands.”
