The Sultan of Sokoto and President General of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs in Nigeria, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has announced Sunday, July 7, 2024, as the first day of Muharram, marking the start of the Islamic year 1446 after Hijrah.

According to a statement by Sambo Junaidu, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs for the Sultanate Council in Sokoto, no reports of moon sightings were received from national and regional moon sighting committees on Friday, July 5, 2024. As a result, Saturday, July 6, will be the 30th day of Dhul’Hijja 1445 AH.

“The national and various moon sighting committees across the country did not receive any report on the sighting of the new moon of Muharram on Friday, 5th July, 2024, which is the 29th of Dhul’Hijja 1445 AH, hence Saturday, 6th of July, is the 30th of Dhul’Hijja,” Junaidu stated.

The Sultan extended his congratulations to Nigerian Muslims on the new year and urged them to pray for the nation’s peace, progress, and development.
