The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the Electricity Distribution Companies (Discos) to reverse the recent tariff hike for Band A customers.

NLC President Joe Ajaero, in a statement on Thursday, criticized the increase from N206.80 to N209.9 per kilowatt-hour as a display of “insincerity and insensitivity” by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government.

“We do not doubt that this frequent crass display of insincerity and insensitivity will pit the people against the government or vice versa,” Ajaero said. “It underscores our argument that the government and entities in the energy sector are not serious about finding an enduring solution to our energy crisis.”

Ajaero emphasized the detrimental impact of the hike on the economy and urged an immediate reversal. “It is unjustifiable, unreasonable, and malevolent. Government and DisCos should stop killing the people and the economy,” he added.

The tariff hike follows a previous increase announced by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission on April 3, 2024, which raised the rate to N225 per kilowatt-hour, later reduced to N206 per kilowatt-hour in May.
