Kenyan police have detained more than 270 individuals accused of committing criminal acts under the guise of participating in anti-government protests on Tuesday, July 2, 2024.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) reported that the suspects were involved in widespread looting and property damage during youth-led demonstrations across the country.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), the DCI revealed that 204 suspects were arrested in Nairobi and another 68 in various other areas. The police are employing CCTV footage and mobile phone recordings to identify and pursue additional suspects.

Protests initially began peacefully but escalated into violence, particularly in Nairobi, where police deployed tear gas against rock-throwing protesters. Gen-Z activist Hanifa Adan noted the presence of “goons” infiltrating the protests, exacerbating the chaos.

The demonstrations were sparked by a controversial finance bill proposing new taxes, which has since been withdrawn. However, protesters are now demanding President William Ruto’s resignation under the hashtag #RutoMustGo. The unrest follows a period of significant violence, with the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) reporting 39 deaths and 361 injuries from earlier rallies.

Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki condemned the violence and pledged government action against criminal gangs involved in the protests. Further demonstrations are planned for Thursday and Sunday as the crisis continues to challenge Ruto’s administration.
