In a final push before the UK’s national election on Thursday, both Keir Starmer and Rishi Sunak have warned of severe economic consequences should the other win. Opinion polls predict a significant victory for Starmer’s Labour Party, which could end 14 years of Conservative rule and install him as Prime Minister.

Labour campaign coordinator Pat McFadden urged voters to remember the ongoing economic challenges, saying, “If you vote Conservative, nothing will change. If you don’t vote at all or vote for another party, you risk waking up on Friday to Rishi Sunak walking through the door to No. 10 once again.”

Starmer’s campaign focuses on a promise of “Change,” addressing public dissatisfaction with the current state of public services and living standards. In contrast, Sunak contends his tenure has placed the economy on a recovery path, mitigating the effects of COVID-19 and the Ukraine war.

With Labour maintaining a 20-point lead, Conservatives have shifted their strategy to minimize defeat, cautioning that a large Labour majority could lead to significant tax increases. “The larger the supermajority, the easier it will be to ram through extreme policies – and the more tax rises will be inflicted on the British people,” the Conservatives warned.

Polling stations open at 0600 GMT on Thursday.
