Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has inaugurated the All Progressives Congress campaign council for the 2027 elections, directing members to begin grassroots mobilisation across the state’s 20 local government areas, 236 wards and polling units.
The inauguration moves the party from informal political signalling into a more organised phase of consultation and voter engagement. It also strengthens the structure around Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, widely known as YAYI, whose governorship ambition has become central to the emerging contest.
Abiodun, who chairs the council, told members that political reputation and large rallies would not be enough. He called for deliberate organisation, vigilance and sustained contact with voters.
“Let consultations and campaign now begin,” Governor Dapo Abiodun told members of the newly inaugurated council.
From structure to street level politics
A campaign council can produce lists, committees and public declarations. Its real test is whether those structures reach residents and listen to their priorities. In Ogun, those priorities vary across industrial communities, border towns, farming areas and fast growing settlements linked to Lagos.
For a trader in Sango, the campaign may be judged by transport costs, electricity and market conditions. For a farmer in Yewa, roads, storage and access to buyers may matter more. Young people across the state will be listening for credible plans on jobs, skills and business opportunities. Families will want clear commitments on schools, healthcare and security.
Abiodun urged the council to translate its organisation into action at ward and polling unit level. That direction reflects a lesson repeated in Nigerian elections: visible crowds do not automatically become votes. Local relationships, voter registration, party unity and trust often determine whether enthusiasm survives until election day.
The responsibility that follows endorsement
Support for YAYI gives the campaign momentum, but it also increases scrutiny. Voters will expect the senator and his supporters to move beyond endorsements and explain what they would do differently in government.
That conversation should include measurable proposals for infrastructure, education, healthcare, agriculture, industrial growth and the state’s finances. It should also address how development will be balanced across Ogun’s three senatorial districts and how communities will participate after the election.
The council must avoid reducing grassroots mobilisation to posters, motorcades and slogans. Serious engagement means taking questions, documenting local concerns and returning with answers. It also means keeping political activity peaceful and respecting opponents, institutions and the law.
What comes next
The inauguration is the beginning of a political machine, not proof of electoral victory. Its effectiveness will depend on the people selected to lead at local level, the unity of the APC, the response of rival parties and the campaign’s ability to connect promises with daily life.
Ogun residents should now ask each campaign to publish priorities, timelines and clear standards by which progress can be measured.
