The Nigerian film industry is in mourning following the death of veteran Nollywood actor Solomon Akiyesi, who reportedly passed away in his sleep on Sunday, April 27, 2026, in Abuja.

The Actors Guild of Nigeria confirmed Akiyesi’s death, marking another loss for Nollywood in recent months. Tributes have poured in from colleagues, with actress Celestina Dovigalle describing him as a “lively presence whose humour brightened movie sets.” In an emotional post, Dovigalle recalled his ability to “turn even the most serious set into a moment of joy” and said his joyful personality would remain unforgettable.

Akiyesi was known for his comic roles and energetic screen presence, earning him a reputation as one of the actors who could “light up a room with laughter.” Beyond acting, he was also known for controversies surrounding his personal life, including highly publicized marital scandals in 2016 when he was labelled a “serial husband” by critics. He consistently denied the allegations, insisting he had been married only twice.

His death adds to a growing list of Nollywood losses in 2026. The industry had earlier this year mourned the passing of veteran actress Oby Kechere, popularly known as “Ms Koi Koi” for her role in the 2002 comedy classic Aki na Ukwa, who died on April 27 after a prolonged illness. Other losses this year include comic actor Bamidele Oluwatope Saint, known as Okemesi, who died in February, and gospel singer Bunmi Akinnanu.
