The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has announced a 12-hour movement restriction in parts of Abuja ahead of the Area Council elections.
The police said the restriction will take effect from midnight until noon on election day to maintain order, prevent violence, and ensure that voters can cast their ballots without disruption.
According to the police, the measure is meant to curb potential security challenges and guarantee the safety of electoral officials, materials, and the general public during the voting process.
Officers will be deployed across strategic points in the territory to enforce the restriction and respond to any incidents that may arise throughout the period.
Residents and commuters were informed to plan their movements accordingly, with authorities urging compliance to avoid arrest or fines. The FCT command reassured the public that the temporary restriction is a standard security procedure and that normal movement will resume once the designated period ends.
Political parties and civil society organisations largely welcomed the announcement, saying it could reduce the risk of election-day disturbances.
However, some community members expressed concerns about access to essential services during the restriction period and called on security agencies to allow for reasonable exemptions where necessary.
