Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has made a significant move by officially joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The announcement was made in Enugu on December 31, 2025, marking a new chapter in Obi’s political journey.
Obi’s decision to join the ADC is seen as a strategic move ahead of the 2027 elections, with his sights set on transforming and rescuing Nigeria. He emphasized his commitment to resisting election rigging by all lawful means, stating, “We will resist rigging of election by every lawful means in 2027”.
The former Anambra governor’s defection has sparked interest, given his influence and popularity, particularly among the Obidient movement. His move is expected to reshape political alignments and could potentially impact the 2027 general elections.
Obi’s joining the ADC follows the defection of some notable politicians, including his ally Oseloka Obaze, who joined the party earlier in December. Other prominent figures expected to join Obi in the ADC include Senators Victor Umeh and Enyinnaya Abaribe.
The ADC has welcomed Obi, but there are indications of underlying tensions within the party, particularly regarding the presidential ticket for 2027. Obi’s camp has expressed concerns about “unsigned agreements” and zoning arrangements, which have led to speculation about his true intentions.
