In a recent dispute, the Chief Imam of Ogbomoso, Oyo State, Nigeria, Sheik Teliat Yinus Ayilara, asserted that his position as Chief Imam is independent of traditional authority, responding to a query issued by the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Afolabi Ghandi Olaoye, for undertaking a Hajj pilgrimage without prior notification.

Addressing the query in a letter, Ayilara stated, “The office of Grand Chief Imam of Ogbomosoland is not a traditional title and, therefore, not under the control of the Soun of Ogbomosoland.”

He emphasized that his role as the spiritual head of the Muslim community in Ogbomoso does not fall under Yoruba traditional oversight, noting, “As a Muslim leader, I am not subjugating Islamic practice to Yoruba tradition and culture.”

The Chief Imam highlighted that his respect for Yoruba culture motivated his response, despite the legal contention between him and the traditional ruler currently before the court. Ayilara urged respect for the judicial process, adding, “The court must be respected in matters that directly relate to ongoing legal disputes.”

The letter also addressed Ayilara’s decisions on recent religious appointments, which he asserted should not be subject to the Soun’s authority. The dispute has been forwarded to his legal representatives for further court deliberation.
