Chidinma Modupe Okafor from Lagos, Nigeria, has set a new world record for the longest crocheting marathon, completing an impressive 72-hour session.

According to a Guinness World Records update on Tuesday, the 30-year-old more than doubled the previous record of 34 hours and 7 minutes, held by Alessandra Hayden from the USA since 2021.

During her three-day “crochet-a-thon,” Chidinma crafted a white dinner gown, showcasing her lifelong passion for crocheting and pushing her physical and mental limits. “I aim to showcase the artistry and perseverance involved in this craft and promote awareness about crocheting and its benefits,” she explained.

Chidinma’s achievement involved crocheting non-stop, only pausing briefly for essential breaks. She was allowed a total of two hours of rest per day, adhering strictly to the rules for ‘longest marathon’ records. Her preparation included rigorous training, mental conditioning, and logistical planning to ensure an uninterrupted supply of yarn and support.

Initially aiming to create a wedding gown, she adapted her project into a versatile dinner gown as the marathon progressed. Chidinma credited her inspiration to Hilda Baci, another Nigerian record-breaker known for the world’s longest cooking marathon.

Her record joins a growing list of extraordinary achievements by Nigerians, including Helen Williams, Ewa Cole, Clara Chizoba Kronborg, and Tonye Solomon, each contributing to the country’s reputation for exceptional talent and determination.
