
President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria has approved a significant upgrade for Ibadan Airport, announced Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde on Wednesday, June 26, 2024.
Governor Makinde, speaking during a meeting with Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Baba Abubakar, revealed that the upgrade would commence in three weeks. The project includes constructing a new terminal, expanding the runway, and enhancing other structural features to meet international standards.
“We have been in discussions with the Presidency, and this week, we received confirmation that President Tinubu has graciously approved my request for the Ibadan Airport upgrade,” said Governor Makinde. “This development is central to our economic expansion agenda.”
The governor emphasized that his administration has focused on education, agriculture, health, and economic growth, identifying the airport upgrade as essential to enhancing the state’s economy. He also mentioned ongoing investments in infrastructure, including the 110-kilometre Ibadan Circular Road, and addressed the Air Force’s request for land for a post-retirement housing scheme along this corridor.
The meeting also highlighted the state’s collaboration with the Air Force on internal security and infrastructure projects around the Air Force Base in Ajia, Ibadan.
Air Marshal Abubakar commended Governor Makinde for his visionary leadership and support, particularly in acquiring land for the Air Force Base and providing operational vehicles. He urged the governor to expedite the completion of the 10km Ajia-Airport Road to facilitate the Air Force’s activities.
Governor Makinde assured that the administration would maintain its commitment to improving infrastructure and security in Oyo State.
