The Badagry West Local Council Development Area (LCDA) has halted the construction of the “Eze Ndi-Igbo Palace Project,” deeming it unauthorized and against Lagos State laws.

This decision follows revelations of a letter purportedly issued by the Ohaneze Ndi-Igbo Traditional Ruling Council, seeking public funds for the palace and promoting the unrecognized title of Eze Ndi-Igbo of Badagry West LCDA.

According to a statement signed by Mesewaku M. Stephen, Esq., Head of Legal Services Unit, Lagos State does not recognize the title Eze Ndi-Igbo under its Obas and Chiefs Law, meaning the title has no legal or traditional sanction within the state.

The council acknowledged the positive role of the Igbo community in Badagry West LCDA but stressed that it will not permit practices or titles alien to the state’s laws. The statement declared, “Anything not known to law remains an illegality.”

Executive Chairman Mr. Rauf Ibrahim Kayode Yemaren (RIKAY) emphasized that Badagry West LCDA is known for its ethnic harmony and peace, built on respect for lawful authority. He clarified that while leadership to coordinate the Igbo community is acceptable, it must conform to existing chieftaincy laws and must not challenge the authority of traditional rulers such as the Alapa of Apa Kingdom and the Akweno of Kweme Kingdom.

The council has ordered an immediate cessation of all activities related to the palace project and the unapproved Eze Ndi-Igbo title. Authorities including the Alapa of Apa Kingdom, Akweno of Kweme Kingdom, the Area Commander of Nigeria Police Area ‘K’ Command, and the Divisional Police Officer of Seme Division have been notified.

Members of the public are advised to disregard any fundraising appeals or correspondence related to the controversial palace project in Badagry West LCDA.

This move underscores the council’s commitment to uphold the rule of law and respect for the established traditional institutions within its jurisdiction.
