The Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has clarified the conditions under which he could consider the release of prominent native doctors currently facing trial in the state.
The detained individuals include Chigozie Nwangu, popularly known as Akwa Okuko Tiwara Aki from Oba, Eke Hit from Okija, and Onyeze Jesus from Nkpor.
They were arrested in February 2025 on serious allegations including promoting fraudulent get-rich-quick schemes, preparing charms for suspected criminals, and misleading youths into believing in wealth without legitimate hard work.
During a visit to Nwangu’s hometown of Oba, Governor Soludo was met with appeals from local youths calling for the release of the native doctor, who is considered an influential community figure.
However, Soludo firmly emphasized that the matter is subject to judicial process and beyond his unilateral control.
He explained, “You are asking for the release of Akwa Okuko, but I want to say that there is a process. There is a process for me to follow, and there is a process for the court to follow too. Where we are now is the process of the court.”
Soludo urged all stakeholders to pray for a speedy trial. Only after the judicial system concludes the matter, and if the individuals are found guilty and convicted, can community leaders approach him to discuss the possibility of a pardon. Until then, his hands are tied.
The Governor also called on youths to support government efforts in combating social vices such as drug abuse, kidnapping, and the obsession with “fast money,” emphasizing the importance of restoring values centered on hard work and integrity in Anambra State.
This stance underscores the Governor’s commitment to due process and the rule of law while acknowledging community sentiments and the need for social reforms.
