Malawi’s incumbent President Lazarus Chakwera officially conceded defeat on September 24, 2025, in the presidential election held on September 16. In a national address, Chakwera acknowledged that his rival, former President Peter Mutharika, had an “insurmountable lead,” signalling a peaceful transfer of power.
Chakwera, who took office in 2020 following a court-ordered rerun election after allegations of irregularities in the 2019 vote, called Mutharika to wish him well shortly before the final results were due to be announced. He expressed commitment to upholding democratic principles and ensuring a smooth transition.
Preliminary results showed Mutharika, an 85-year-old former law professor and leader of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), securing approximately 57 to 68 percent of votes across Malawi’s 36 districts, comfortably surpassing Chakwera’s tally of around 24 percent. Mutharika previously lost his presidency to Chakwera in a landmark rerun election but gained renewed support amid widespread criticism of Chakwera’s tenure.
Malawi’s economy was a dominant issue in the election, with voters expressing frustration over rising inflation, food shortages caused by cyclones and drought, and persistent unemployment. Inflation has hovered above 20 percent for over three years, and many Malawians struggle with poverty, making the economic situation a critical factor shaping voter sentiment.
Political analysis suggests Mutharika’s victory marks a significant comeback and reflects public desire for change after Chakwera’s mixed record on tackling corruption and spurring economic growth.
The Malawi Electoral Commission was expected to release official final results shortly after Chakwera’s concession, cementing Mutharika’s return as President.
This peaceful concession highlights Malawi’s democratic maturity and the orderly electoral process despite the country’s social and economic challenges.
The handover sets the stage for Mutharika’s attempt to address Malawi’s pressing issues and restore confidence among citizens.
