The Nigerian Senate Ad hoc Committee investigating the utilization of a 30 trillion naira Ways and Means facility between 2015 and 2023 has clarified its ongoing status amid recent speculations.
Senator Isah Jibrin, Chairman of the Committee representing Kogi East, refuted claims from an unnamed online report suggesting that the investigation has stalled. He emphasized that despite the initial six-week timeframe given for the investigation, which began in March 2024, the committee is actively pursuing its mandate due to the critical nature of the assignment.
According to Senator Jibrin, “The essence of an investigation is to come up with factual findings and not just roll in a report within a specified timeframe. Investigation on the 30 trillion naira Ways and Means is on course and not in any way in limbo as insinuated by an online platform.”
He further revealed that significant progress has been made, citing a recent letter sent as a reminder to the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation on 19th June 2024. The letter requested additional information crucial to the investigation, including details of disbursements under Ways and Means, names of beneficiaries, amounts and dates of disbursements, purposes of disbursements, terms and repayment schedules where applicable, and adherence to these schedules.
