The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, NiHSA, has warned that Rivers Niger and Benue have reached their peak, posing a threat to Nigerians living in the areas. NiHSA’s Director General, Muhammad Umar, said it’s critical for people to heed the warning and evacuate areas prone to flood disasters.

Rivers Niger and Benue have reached peak levels, thereby posing a threat of flooding to surrounding areas. Communities along these rivers should take proactive steps to safeguard their lives and property against flooding.

NiHSA is working closely with dam authorities to mitigate the impact of flooding on downstream communities and vulnerable populations.

The water levels are rising fast, posing a great risk to lives and property. Tributaries like Rima, Kaduna, and Gongola are also at their peak, while several major dams are experiencing surges in reservoir levels due to the peak of the rainy season.

Kainji Dam is spilling excess water, putting nearby communities like Kainji town, Patigi, New Bussa, Borgu, and Mokwa at risk of flooding. Jebba Dam is also spilling excess water, threatening communities like Jebba town, Gungu, Gana, Fanga, Bele, Bere, Gaba, and Baro.

Goronyo Dam is filled to capacity, spilling at maximum rate, causing flooding in surrounding communities like Goronyo, Wamako, Shinaka Yerimawa, and Kurukuru. Kiri Dam is spilling excess water, causing flooding in nearby communities like Kiri, Tallum, Banjiram, Purokayo-Lakumna, and Shelleng.

Communities along Rivers Niger and Benue, as well as states like Niger, Kwara, Kogi, Sokoto, and Adamawa, are at risk.

The Federal Government has issued an urgent flood alert for 32 high-risk locations across 11 states, advising immediate evacuation for communities along the floodplains of major rivers.
