The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has formally recognised Senator David Mark as the Interim National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), alongside former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary.

The announcement, posted on INEC’s official website on September 10, 2025, concludes a prolonged internal leadership dispute within the party.

In addition to Mark and Aregbesola, INEC recognised Dr. Ibrahim Mani as National Treasurer, Akibu Dalhatu as National Financial Secretary, and Professor Oserheimen Aigberaodion Osunbor as National Legal Adviser.

This official endorsement strengthens the ADC’s leadership structure ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The ADC, which was adopted by a coalition of opposition parties as its political platform in July 2025, aims to present a united front to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and restore democratic governance.

David Mark has framed the coalition as an effort to rescue Nigeria from what he describes as a gradual shift towards civilian dictatorship under the APC administration.

Mark accused the current government of undermining democratic institutions and destabilising opposition parties to consolidate power.

The coalition, featuring notable political figures including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Nasir El-Rufai, and Rotimi Amaechi, seeks to prevent Nigeria’s descent into a one-party state.

While welcoming INEC’s recognition, the ADC criticised the continued suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from the Senate, describing it as an abuse of power and a potential deterrent to women’s political participation.

The renewed leadership recognition positions the ADC to intensify its campaign efforts and mobilise support nationwide as Nigeria gears up for the 2027 electoral contest.

The commission’s decision was widely commended by party members and supporters as a step towards consolidating multi-party democracy in Nigeria.
