The Department of State Services (DSS) has summoned human rights activist and Sahara Reporters publisher Omoyele Sowore over a social media post deemed “false and malicious” against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The agency alleges that Sowore referred to the President as a “criminal” in a post on August 26, 2025, mocking Tinubu’s remarks on corruption during his visit to Brazil.

In a letter dated September 7, 2025, the DSS directed Sowore to retract the post on X (formerly Twitter) and issue a public apology within one week.

The letter, signed by Uwem Davies on behalf of the DSS Director-General, also demands that Sowore publish the apology in at least two national newspapers and on two national television stations.

Compliance is required by visiting the DSS headquarters in Abuja or submitting the representation via email.

The DSS described Sowore’s post as “repugnant, derogatory, and capable of inciting public disturbance.”

The agency warned that the comments could harm the President’s reputation domestically and internationally, potentially leading to disunity, insurrection, or breakdown of law and order.

Warning Sowore to exercise restraint, the DSS stressed that persons campaigning to lead the country must show responsibility in their speech.

The agency said it would not hesitate to take lawful measures if Sowore fails to comply with the ultimatum.

The DSS also involved the United States Embassy in Abuja by copying them in the correspondence, highlighting the issue’s diplomatic sensitivity given Sowore’s dual residency.

The agency reaffirmed its mandate to combat misinformation and said it would explore all lawful means to ensure national unity is not undermined by false propaganda.

Failure to adhere to the DSS directive within the stipulated time could prompt further legal actions to protect national security and public order.

This development underscores rising tensions between activist voices and governmental authorities over criticism of Nigeria’s leadership.
