A tragic incident occurred on September 3, 2025, in Mabushi, Abuja, where a man, his wife, and their two children were killed in a fatal car crash caused by suspected roadside touts forcibly taking control of the vehicle’s steering.
The family was traveling when the driver stopped briefly at Berger Roundabout in Wuse to pick up a relative, which the touts claimed violated their informal hanging around “rules.”
According to witnesses, the confrontation escalated quickly when one of the touts forcefully wrestled the steering wheel from the driver’s hands, leading the vehicle to lose control and crash into a bridge pillar. The impact killed the entire family instantly.
The incident sparked outrage among residents of the area, who reportedly chased down some of the tout suspects, lynching at least one.
Conflicting reports suggest that up to three touts were killed and set on fire in retaliation.
As of the latest reports, the police have not issued an official statement on the matter, though an investigation is underway.
The tragedy has ignited renewed calls for more effective measures against criminal touts, whose actions have caused numerous accidents and fatalities across Nigerian cities.
The Mabushi tragedy underlines the dangers posed by touts’ violent interference with motorists and highlights the urgent need for government intervention to safeguard road users and restore public order.
