Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, has opened up about a “silly” royal rule she had to obey constantly during her time as a working member of the British Royal family, revealing how it made her feel “inauthentic.”
In a candid interview on The Circuit podcast with host Emily Chang, Meghan shared that she was required to wear nude pantyhose at all times when carrying out royal duties. She said, “I hadn’t seen pantyhose since movies in the ’80s when they came in the little egg. That felt a little bit inauthentic. And that’s a silly example, but right now, I don’t feel I need to prove anything.”
Meghan explained that this rule was one of many constraints that made it difficult for her to be truly herself while part of the Royal family. She said, “It’s an example of when you’re able to dress the way you want to dress, say the things that are true, and show up in a space really organically and authentically—that’s being comfortable in your own skin.”
The Duchess also discussed the deliberate muted tones she wore in line with royal protocol, which aims to avoid overshadowing senior royals. She recounted that she often wore beige, camel, or white to blend in, explaining, “There was no version of me joining this family and not doing everything I could to fit in. I don’t want to embarrass the family.”
This revelation highlights the restrictive and often unseen rules that governed Meghan’s royal wardrobe, contrasting sharply with her current freedom to express her authentic self and live comfortably in her own skin.
