The death toll from the ongoing cholera outbreak in Lagos State has climbed to 24, with 35 confirmed cases and 417 suspected cases across 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs), according to the latest official update.

Professor Akin Abayomi, Lagos State Commissioner for Health, confirmed the figures on his X handle, @ProfAkinAbayomi, on Friday. He stated, “The situation report indicates 417 suspected cases, 35 confirmed cases, and a total of 24 recorded deaths. The graphs depict the distribution of cases across the 20 LGAs in the state.”

The Lagos State Cholera Outbreak Situation Report (EPI Week 25), dated June 19, 2024, highlighted that the outbreak’s peak occurred on June 10, particularly affecting the Ajeromi, Kosofe, Epe, Ikorodu, Alimosho, and Eti-Osa LGAs.

In an earlier update, Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Health, noted an increase in fatalities to 21 and reported 401 suspected cases, emphasizing that Lagos Island, Kosofe, and Eti-Osa recorded the highest infection rates.

Professor Abayomi urged residents to maintain strict personal and environmental hygiene to mitigate the risk of infection. “We appeal to Lagosians to adhere strictly to hygiene practices and ensure their environments are clean to stay safe from this deadly infection,” he said.

Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, deploying resources to affected areas to contain the outbreak and provide medical care to those impacted.
