Musician Naira Marley, born Azeez Fashola, has spoken out regarding the death of his former signee, Mohbad (Ilerioluwa Aloba), who died on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27.
In February, a Magistrate’s Court in Yaba, Lagos, acquitted Naira Marley, music promoter Sam Larry (Samson Balogun), Primeboy (Ibrahim Owodunni), and Mohbad’s former manager, Babatunde Opere, of any blame connected to Mohbad’s death.
The Coroner’s Court in Ikorodu later recommended criminal prosecution of Feyisayo Ogedengbe, the auxiliary nurse who treated Mohbad shortly before his death, citing gross negligence for administering an injection without a doctor’s prescription.
Although no foul play or homicide was found, the nurse’s actions were deemed “unlawful and professionally negligent.”
Months after his acquittal, Naira Marley released a video on YouTube explaining his side.
He revealed that on June 7, 2020, he learned Mohbad was using an illegal substance called Ice.
Marley said he advised Mohbad about its dangers, but Mohbad attributed his use to stress and promised to stop.
Marley also presented evidence that Mohbad chose his own manager in July 2020, noting negotiations over commission percentages where he suggested 10 percent instead of the planned 25 percent Mohbad intended to offer.
Naira Marley rose to fame in the Nigerian music scene in 2018 and had previously announced Mohbad and Zinoleesky as signees on his Marlian Music label.
