Oluwakemi Rufai, a newly sworn-in councillor representing Ward C1 in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area of Lagos State, has passed away barely two weeks after taking office.
Rufai, the only female councillor in the legislative council, died in the early hours of Wednesday, August 13, 2025, after a brief illness.
The death was confirmed by Ibeju-Lekki LGA Chairman Sesan Olowa and Lekki LCDA Chairman Rasaki Kasali in separate statements, describing it as a “rude shock” to the council and community.
The Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) also expressed deep sadness over her passing, with spokesman Seye Oladejo describing Rufai as a “rising star within the APC” who embodied “commitment, grassroots service, and gender inclusion”.
Rufai’s dedication to community development and loyalty to the party’s ideals were evident in her short time in office, according to Oladejo.
He extended condolences to Rufai’s family, the Ibeju-Lekki community, and her constituents, noting that “her legacy of service, courage, and vision will not be forgotten”.
