The Kano State House of Assembly has suspended the Chairman of Rano Local Government Council, Muhammad Nazir Yau, for three months over allegations of misconduct, abuse of office, and financial mismanagement.

This decision was reached after the House Committee on Public Petition submitted an interim report recommending Yau’s suspension to allow for a thorough investigation.

According to the Committee Chairman and Majority Leader, Alhaji Lawan Hussaini Dala, the probe was triggered by a petition signed by nine out of the ten councillors in Rano, accusing Yau of financial recklessness, sale of shops, and diversion of fertiliser meant for the local government, among other allegations.

The petitioners also alleged that Yau deliberately created discord among local political leaders and councillors, favouring allies in the distribution of government resources.

The House Committee on Public Petition found grounds for further investigation, recommending Yau’s suspension in line with Section 128 of the Constitution and Section 55 (1–6) of the Kano State Local Government Law 2006.

The Assembly has directed the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to appoint an acting chairman pending the conclusion of the investigation.

The suspension is aimed at allowing a thorough investigation into the allegations, with the Assembly assuring residents that the matter will be thoroughly investigated and appropriate measures will be taken based on the findings.
