The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) suspended the licences of two ValueJet pilots, Captain Oluranti Ogoyi and First Officer Ivan Oloba, following an incident on August 5, 2025, involving Nigerian musician Wasiu Ayinde (KWAM1).

The pilots commenced departure procedures without the mandatory pre-departure clearance after KWAM1 caused a disruption by refusing to surrender a flask suspected to contain alcohol.

The pilot’s decision to proceed endangered ground personnel and violated aviation safety regulations, prompting the NCAA to suspend their licences pending a full investigation.

KWAM1 was banned from flying on Nigerian airlines for six months. However, the aviation industry is divided over these sanctions.

The National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE), led by Mr. Galadima Abednego, urged the NCAA to reconsider the pilots’ suspension. NAAPE condemned KWAM1’s “crude, unruly behaviour” but argued that the pilots, with previously unblemished records, were provoked and that the blame should rest squarely on KWAM1.

They called for a transparent and unbiased investigation and demanded the reinstatement of the pilots’ licences.

On the other hand, aviation safety analysts criticized NAAPE’s appeal, describing it as unprofessional and emphasizing that the pilots’ actions breached crucial safety protocols. A retired Nigeria Airways pilot highlighted that the aircraft’s movement without ground clearance was a clear violation of safety procedures, justifying NCAA’s action.

The ValueJet management has also removed the crew from active duty and pledged cooperation with the NCAA investigation.

The regulatory agencies FAAN and NCAA continue to investigate while upholding safety standards amid public scrutiny over the incident.

This incident has stirred debate about accountability and safety enforcement in Nigerian aviation, balancing professional discretion with strict adherence to international and domestic aviation safety laws.
