The number of fatalities from the ongoing cholera outbreak in Lagos State has increased to 21, with 401 suspected cases now recorded, according to Kemi Ogunyemi, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Health. This marks a rise from the previously reported 350 suspected cases and 15 deaths.

Lagos Island, Kosofe, and Eti Osa are the most affected areas. Ogunyemi noted that the rise in cases was expected following the Ileya festivities, which involved large gatherings. However, suspected cases are now decreasing in some local government areas due to state interventions.

The Lagos State Government, alongside the Ministry of Health and other agencies, is actively monitoring the situation. Measures include testing water, food, and beverages for contamination, and enhancing community surveillance. Ogunyemi emphasized the importance of hygiene practices and community sanitation to curb the spread.

Residents experiencing symptoms such as watery diarrhea, vomiting, and fever are urged to seek free treatment at public health facilities.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and state officials expressed gratitude to local and international partners like UNICEF, WHO, and the Red Cross for their support. The dedicated efforts of health professionals and volunteers in managing the outbreak were also acknowledged.
