Nigeria’s Super Eagles have slipped to 38th in the latest FIFA rankings released on Thursday, June 20, 2024 making a shift in their international standing.

The team now has 1,498.93 points, down from their previous 1,520.27 points, reflecting ongoing challenges on the global stage.

Previously ranked 30th, Nigeria’s decline follows a mixed performance in recent matches, including a 1-1 draw against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana and a 2-1 defeat to the Benin Republic in Ivory Coast. These results come on the heels of their runner-up finish at the African Cup of Nations, where they lost 2-1 to the host nation.

The recent drop in ranking raises concerns about Nigeria’s prospects for the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers, as the Super Eagles struggle to secure crucial victories.

In contrast, Argentina remains atop the FIFA rankings, reinforcing its position as the world’s leading football nation with a gain of 2.14 points, bringing their total to 1,860.14. Argentina’s consistent high-level performance in recent tournaments underscores their dominance.

Liberia has emerged as the biggest climber in the rankings, ascending 10 positions to reach 142nd, gaining 37.47 points. Meanwhile, Equatorial Guinea experienced the steepest decline, dropping 10 positions and losing 47.53 points, marking a notable downturn.
