The ancient city of Ibadan has been thrown into mourning following the death of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Royal Majesty, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin. The revered monarch passed away in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025, just two days after celebrating his 90th birthday.
Oba Olakulehin, born on July 5, 1935, ascended the throne as the 43rd Olubadan in July 2024, succeeding Oba (Dr.) Moshood Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II, who died in March 2024 at the age of 81. His coronation was officiated by the Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, who presented him with the staff of office on July 12, 2024.
Before becoming Olubadan, Oba Olakulehin had risen through the ranks of the traditional chieftaincy system, serving as the Balogun Olubadan, a high-ranking title in the Ibadan traditional hierarchy. Though his reign was brief, he was known for his commitment to fostering peace, development, and unity in Ibadanland.
The news of his passing has sent shockwaves across the state, with tributes pouring in from government officials, traditional rulers, and residents. The Oyo State Government and the Olubadan-in-Council are expected to release an official statement regarding burial arrangements and succession plans in the coming days.
As the city mourns, residents reflect on the late monarch’s legacy, remembering him as a stabilizing force and a custodian of Ibadan’s rich cultural heritage.
