Former Hull City manager Rubén Sellés has been appointed as the new head coach of Sheffield United on a three-year contract. Additional coaching staff appointments are expected to be confirmed soon as he assembles his backroom team.

Sellés replaces Chris Wilder, who left the club by mutual consent after a post-season review. The Blades narrowly missed out on a return to the Premier League, losing the Championship play-off final to Sunderland after conceding two late goals at Wembley.

Despite guiding Hull City to Championship safety, Sellés was dismissed by the Tigers. His coaching résumé includes spells in charge at Reading and a stint as interim manager at Southampton. Notably, his Hull side defeated Wilder’s Sheffield United 3-0 at Bramall lane in January.

The club’s US-based owners, COH Sports — headed by Steven Rosen and Helmy Eltoukhy — decided to make a managerial change as they seek a new direction. Though Gary O’Neil was considered, the board opted to appoint Sellés instead.

Wilder’s second tenure at Sheffield United came to an end under the new ownership, who completed their takeover in December with Wilder still in charge. The club paid tribute to his lasting impact, stating his legacy “will never be forgotten,” and extended their appreciation to both Wilder and his trusted coaching team, Alan Knill and Matt Prestridge.
