Afrobeats superstar Davido has stirred widespread conversation after publicly affirming his Igbo heritage, declaring, “I am Igbo by blood.” This statement, which comes amid ongoing discussions about his cultural identity, has led many fans and commentators to highlight the significant role played by his paternal grandmother, the late Dr Nnenna Esther Adeleke, in shaping his family’s lineage and cultural legacy.
Dr Nnenna Esther Adeleke was born in Akwete, Ukwa East Local Government Area of Abia State, and was a proud Igbo woman. She was the mother of Dr. Adedeji Adeleke, who is Davido’s father, as well as Governor Ademola Adeleke and the late Senator Isiaka Adeleke. Her influence extended across both Yoruba and Igbo communities, and she was known for her dedication to her family and her roots. Dr Adeleke passed away in 2011, but her legacy continues to resonate within the Adeleke family, who remain prominent figures in Nigerian society.
Davido’s father and his siblings are noted for their fluency in Igbo, with Governor Ademola Adeleke even remarking that their command of the language surpasses their Yoruba. This deep connection to Igbo culture is a point of pride for the family and has become an important part of Davido’s own identity.
Reflecting on his heritage, Davido shared a poignant memory from his childhood. He recalled, “I was 10 years old when my late mother told me this: ‘David Obim, you will achieve great things but will grow greater if you keep in touch with my people. They will teach you how not to depend on your father’s wealth but also grow your own.’” For Davido, being Igbo is more than a matter of ancestry; it is a spiritual connection that brings him joy, love, and inspiration. He explained, “When I say ‘I am Igbo,’ it goes beyond just words but spiritual. When I am around Igbo, all I get is joy, love, and how to make more money! I love you mummy.”
Davido’s affirmation of his Igbo heritage and his heartfelt tribute to his late grandmother have resonated with many, highlighting the enduring importance of family, culture, and legacy in his life and career. The story of Dr Nnenna Esther Adeleke and the Adeleke family serves as a testament to the rich and diverse cultural tapestry that defines many Nigerian families.
