Abdul Abiola, one of the sons of the late Chief MKO Abiola, has made startling revelations regarding his father’s death, implicating both international and local forces in the tragedy.

Abdul’s disclosures come as he appeared on Seun Okinbaloye’s podcast on Saturday, July 15, 2024, shedding new light on the circumstances surrounding the demise of the acclaimed winner of the annulled 1993 presidential election.

During the podcast, Abdul contended that a coalition of actors opposed to MKO Abiola’s vision for Nigeria and Africa conspired against him, facilitating his eventual assassination. He stated, “A team of people worked against Abiola because he had announced that he would declare daily barrels of oil when he becomes president.” He suggested that these entities favored the late General Sani Abacha’s presidency over Abiola’s progressive policies.

Abdul also highlighted a significant diplomatic incident to underscore the political machinations against his father. “Remember Abiola went to America without a passport — the famous no passport case. He was the only man allowed to enter the US without a passport. He went to meet [President] Clinton, and I’m sure he would have been looking at him like, ‘You want to bring democracy to Africa? Democracy is only good for them, but they would impose dictatorship across the world, yet they claim to be the democratic world. It’s a sham.’”

Abiola, who had won the 1993 presidential election, saw his victory annulled by then military Head of State, General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida. His death in custody in 1998 remains a subject of controversy and debate, with many speculating on the international dimensions of the political opposition he faced.
