Ghanaians will face a three-week disruption in power supply due to a shortage in gas, as announced by the state-owned Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCO) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
In a joint statement issued on Thursday, June 13, 2024, the companies explained that maintenance by a Nigerian gas supplier has significantly reduced the gas supply. “The Ghana Grid Company LTD (GRIDCO) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) wish to inform the public that due to a reduction in gas supply from Nigeria since yesterday, Wednesday, 12th June 2024, some areas across the country have experienced an interruption in power supply,” the statement read.
The West Africa Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCO) attributed the shortage to ongoing maintenance work, which is expected to continue for three weeks. This has led to a decreased power generation capacity in Ghana, necessitating potential load management measures.
To mitigate the impact, GRIDCO and ECG are collaborating with stakeholders to optimize available resources. The companies also apologized to the public for any inconvenience caused during this period.
