The Lagos State Government has announced strict penalties for illegal waste disposal, warning that offenders could face three months imprisonment or a N250,000 fine. Tokunbo Wahab, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, disclosed this during a media briefing, emphasizing the state’s zero-tolerance stance on environmental violations.
In a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Wednesday, Wahab stated that full enforcement of the ban on single-use plastics would commence on July 1. He also warned that indiscriminate dumping of refuse, street littering, and environmental defacement would attract severe penalties under the state’s sanitation laws.
The commissioner revealed that over 3,000 offenders had already been arrested, reiterating that the government would not tolerate illegal waste disposal, cart pushing, public defecation, or unauthorized street trading. He urged residents to adopt responsible waste management practices, particularly during the upcoming Sallah celebrations.
“Bag your waste properly, avoid dumping in drains or road medians, and ensure you hand over refuse only to assigned PSP operators,” Wahab advised. The move aims to promote cleanliness and sustainable waste management across Lagos metropolis.
