Nigerian music legend and activist Charly Boy has praised singer Davido for boldly identifying himself as Igbo by blood despite being a Yoruba man, a statement that has sparked both backlash and important conversations about tribalism in Nigeria.

The controversy began when an X user criticized Davido for associating closely with the Igbo community, warning him about perceived tribal tensions. Davido’s simple but powerful response, “Lol, I AM IGBO by blood,” challenged deep-rooted tribal divisions and resonated widely.

On May 25, 2025, Charly Boy took to Instagram to laud Davido’s statement as a cultural bridge that could unite the country. He emphasized that knowing one’s identity makes it impossible for tribe to be used as a tool for division. According to Charly Boy, Davido’s words remind Nigerians that they are more connected than often realized and that such bold unity is crucial for healing the nation’s tribal scars.

Charly Boy also highlighted how societal norms pressure Nigerians to “stay in their tribal lane,” marry within their tribe, and avoid crossing cultural boundaries. He applauded Davido for breaking this cycle and urged Nigerians to question who benefits from tribal conflicts.

He concluded with a hopeful vision: a Nigeria where diverse ethnic groups—Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, Ijaw, Efik, Tiv, and Fulani—can come together, share dreams, and build a united future.

“Forget wetin dem tell you — this na the Nigeria we dey fight for,” Charly Boy wrote, calling for unity beyond tribal lines.
