Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has assured supporters that he will contest the 2027 general election under the Labour Party banner. Speaking in a video shared with young party supporters, Obi emphasized his continued commitment to the party despite ongoing internal challenges within the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which he attributed to government interference.
Obi stated firmly, “I will still continue to run in the Labour Party. I’m a member of the Labour Party.” He explained that the current crises in opposition parties are deliberate disruptions orchestrated by the government to weaken political opposition. Reflecting on past experiences, he recalled how, during President Yar’Adua’s administration, he intervened to resolve party conflicts by appealing directly to the president and the then INEC chairman.
The former Anambra State governor urged Nigerians, especially the youth, to remain steadfast and take responsibility for ensuring their votes count, warning that those benefiting from the status quo will resist positive change. He also advocated for a retirement age for politicians, noting that by 2027 he would be 65 and expressed his desire not to contest elections in his 70s.
The Labour Party has reaffirmed its confidence in Obi’s leadership, reserving its 2027 presidential ticket for him, while also endorsing Governor Alex Otti for re-election in Abia State and Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour for the Lagos governorship. Party officials have dismissed rumors of internal collapse, stressing ongoing efforts to strengthen party unity and discipline ahead of the next election cycle.
Labour Party leaders have launched “Operation Recover and Redeem,” a strategy aimed at resolving internal disputes and restoring the party’s integrity to position it as a formidable challenger to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The party’s renewed focus is to unseat President Bola Tinubu through democratic means in 2027.
As the political landscape intensifies, Peter Obi and the Labour Party are gearing up for a robust campaign, promising to bring about meaningful change and challenge the dominance of the APC in Nigeria’s upcoming elections.
