The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ward 5, Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State, Nelson Adepoyigi, has been killed by his abductors despite the payment of a ₦5 million ransom.
Adepoyigi was kidnapped last Monday while parking his vehicle at his residence in Ifon town. The kidnappers initially demanded a ₦100 million ransom, but after negotiations, the family managed to raise and deliver ₦5 million. Two community members who volunteered to deliver the ransom were also seized by the kidnappers and held captive.
Following the ransom delivery, the kidnappers demanded an additional ₦30 million for the release of all three captives. However, the situation took a tragic turn when the abductors shot Adepoyigi dead and released the two ransom bearers on Friday.
The Chairman of Ose Local Government, Kolapo Ojo, confirmed the incident, describing it as deeply saddening and a painful loss for the community. Ojo lamented the escalating insecurity in the area, noting that brazen abductions have become alarmingly frequent-even at people’s doorsteps. He urged residents to remain vigilant, promptly report suspicious activities, and unite to confront the growing threat.
Ojo extended condolences to Adepoyigi’s family, friends, and political associates, praising the late chairman’s dedication to the progress of the party and the grassroots community. He also revealed that just days before the incident, another resident narrowly escaped being kidnapped while parking his motorcycle, underscoring the critical security challenges facing the region.
Meanwhile, the police have deployed special officers to Ifon to investigate the killing and the circumstances surrounding the abduction. As of the time of reporting, the state police command had yet to officially confirm the killing, but efforts to track down the perpetrators are ongoing.
