Akayla and Justin Bearden, both 24, were arrested and charged with child neglect after their 6-month-old twin infants were found with severe rat bite injuries in their home in Belton, Anderson County, South Carolina. Deputies responded to a 911 call on May 9, 2025, from the mother reporting that her baby girl was covered in blood in her bassinet. Upon arrival, officers discovered the infant with extensive bite marks on her face, arms, ears, and head. Her twin brother also had bite marks on his feet.
The parents admitted to knowing about a persistent rat infestation in their single-wide home for several months but failed to take action to protect their children. The injured baby girl was rushed to Greenville Memorial Hospital, where she remains under treatment. The twin brother’s injuries were less severe and did not require hospitalization. Both twins, along with an older sibling, have been placed in the custody of the South Carolina Department of Social Services (DSS) for their safety.
Akayla and Justin Bearden face two counts each of unlawful conduct toward a child, a felony in South Carolina that carries significant penalties. They have been barred from contacting their children unless authorized by DSS. The couple is scheduled for a bond hearing.
This disturbing case has drawn widespread attention and highlighted issues of child welfare, housing conditions, and parental responsibility. Authorities continue to investigate, and additional charges may be forthcoming. The community has expressed shock and concern over the neglect that allowed such harm to come to vulnerable infants.
