Senate President Godswill Akpabio has come under intense scrutiny after reportedly withdrawing from a presidential panel set up to investigate sexual harassment allegations against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central. The panel, established by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on April 2, 2025, was tasked with conducting a thorough and impartial probe into the explosive claims that have dominated national discourse and caused embarrassment within the political establishment.

Vice President Kashim Shettima was appointed to chair the panel, with members including National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, the Attorney General of the Federation, and representatives nominated by both Akpabio and Akpoti-Uduaghan. Akpabio’s sudden withdrawal, which occurred without any official explanation, has triggered widespread speculation and criticism across the country.

The Action Collective, a political pressure group, issued a statement demanding answers from Akpabio and questioning his commitment to transparency. The group suggested that Akpabio’s exit may be linked to alleged “undue interference by the Executive” and a lack of trust in the panel’s neutrality, but challenged these justifications, calling for the Senate President to clarify his position or step aside.

The controversy has further deepened divisions within the Senate. Critics have accused the legislative body of attempting to suppress the issue by suspending Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan while investigations were ongoing-a move widely described as a silencing tactic. Meanwhile, Akpoti-Uduaghan has remained resolute, vowing to present evidence in court and pursue justice despite her suspension.
