The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has announced May 9, 2025 as the commencement date for airlifting Nigerian pilgrims to Saudi Arabia, following a high-level briefing with the Vice President at the Presidential Villa today.

During the comprehensive review of Hajj preparations, the Vice President issued a firm directive to NAHCON officials, emphasizing the need for flawless execution of this year’s pilgrimage. “Every resource must be deployed, every contingency planned for,” he stated. “We cannot afford any lapses in what is both a spiritual journey for our citizens and a major national operation.”

The Commission revealed it has secured 32,000 slots for Nigerian pilgrims through the Hajj Savings Scheme, with additional allocations expected through state pilgrim boards. Key preparations discussed included:

  • Flight Operations: Coordination with designated airlines for the 45-day airlift schedule
  • Accommodation: Finalization of housing arrangements in Mecca and Medina
  • Medical Services: Deployment of 150 medical personnel and establishment of clinics
  • Logistics: Ground transportation and feeding plans for pilgrims

The VP particularly stressed the importance of pilgrim welfare, demanding strict adherence to safety protocols and quality service delivery. “From airport processing to accommodation in the Holy Land, every touchpoint must reflect our commitment to excellence,” he noted.

NAHCON Chairman Alhaji Zikrullah Hassan assured that all state pilgrim boards have been mobilized, with orientation programs scheduled nationwide. “We’ve learned from previous operations and are implementing technological solutions for real-time monitoring of all pilgrims,” he stated.

The Federal Government has approved special arrangements for elderly pilgrims, including priority boarding and dedicated medical teams. Security agencies have also finalized plans for the deployment of 250 personnel to assist Saudi authorities in protecting Nigerian pilgrims.

With the Hajj fare fixed at ₦2.8 million for 2025, the Commission warned against last-minute registrations, setting April 30 as the deadline for complete documentation. Over 65,000 Nigerians are expected to perform the pilgrimage this year.

The VP concluded by emphasizing the spiritual significance of the exercise: “Beyond the logistics, we must remember this is a sacred journey. Our success will be measured not just in smooth operations, but in facilitating a truly transformative experience for every pilgrim.”
